Stainless Steel 317 has ~18–20% chromium, 11–15% nickel, 3–4% molybdenum, and <0.08% carbon. The low-carbon type 317L has max 0.03% carbon to avoid precipitation of carbides during welding. Both grades provide tensile strength ~75 ksi (515 MPa), yield strength ~30 ksi (205 MPa), and elongation of ~35%. They have high molybdenum content, which enhances resistance to crevice corrosion and pitting in chlorides. The alloy does not degrade due to elevation in temperature and can be used in corrosive, high-pressure environments within chemical process systems.

Stainless Steel 317/317L forged fittings are generally applied in flue gas desulfurization, chemical plant operations, and the pharmaceutical industry where resistance to organic and inorganic acids is of utmost importance. The fittings are superior in systems dealing with sulfur-containing compounds, chlorides, or high levels of acetic and formic acids. 317L is especially well-liked in welded structures because it resists intergranular corrosion. In the Houston area, these forged fittings are utilized within refineries, petrochemical facilities, and marine operations where temperature extremes and heavy corrosiveness demand reliable, long-lasting pipe fittings that can stand up to rigid ASME and ASTM requirements.
