304/304L stainless steel has ~18–20% chromium and ~8–11% nickel. 304L possesses lower carbon (~0.03%) for enhanced weldability and corrosion protection in heat-affected areas. The mechanical properties are tensile strength ~75 ksi (515 MPa), yield strength ~30 ksi (205 MPa), and elongation ~40%. The alloys are resistant to oxidation and corrosion in most atmospheric and mild chemical exposures. 304L provides equivalent mechanical strength to 304 but with greater protection from carbide precipitation during welding.
